Jack Straw to "push on" with motor reform
24/01/2012
Jack Straw has vowed to fight on in his bid to reform the UK motor insurance market despite his Motor Insurance Regulation Bill hitting the wall.
Mr Straw told Insurance Age that despite his bill failing to make the statute book, he was satisfied that it had acted as a prompt to government to act on the issues surrounding the motor market.
“Of the four substantive clauses in my bill I have achieved agreement, to varying extents, on three of the four areas,” he claimed.
“The government is currently putting a ban on referral fees through Parliament, the Justice Minister Mr Djanogly told the Commons that the government intended to reduce the legal fees arising from use of the RTA portal; and the government has expressed serious concerns about the rising whiplash epidemic that I have helped highlight.
“I will continue to push on this issue to ensure honest motorists see their premium brought under control.”
At a recent meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Insurance and Financial Services, Mr Straw warned that if the market did not do more to reform the private motor market, it faced the prospect of greater regulation bearing down on it.
