Letter - Nick and Tom in agreement?
05/08/2010
It is a pleasure to be able to write ‘I agree with Tom [Jones, Thompsons partner]’
Read the article: The claimant’s view: a sledgehammer to crack a tabloid nut.
In the Association of British Insurers’ response to the Lord Young review of health and safety legislation, we wrote: "Your review presents an excellent opportunity to improve the perception of health and safety among the public, and the understanding of health and safety legislation.
“UK health and safety legislation has delivered significant reductions in death and serious injuries. The Health and Safety at Work Act provides a framework for businesses and other bodies to work in â it provides certainty and incentivises employers.”
Many of the stories surrounding health and safety are just that: stories. But there is no doubt some over-interpretation of regulations, and excessively risk-averse behaviour, is driven by concerns about civil liability proceedings, fostered by the problems around claims management companies and the dysfunction of the personal injury compensation system.
That is why the reform of the personal injury compensation system, for which the ABI has long campaigned, is so important. I hope Tom can ‘agree with Nick’ and join us in welcoming the government’s announcement that it is to consult on the Jackson Review recommendations.
